Lush made a bold statement today by closing all their stores, factories, and even their website, with a clear message: “Stop Starving Gaza.” This move really struck a chord with me.
I have always loved this brand for so many reasons. They are known for taking a stand on major issues like the environment and sustainability, and that has always been a big reason I choose to shop there. On top of that, their customer service is second to none. Every time I visit, I am greeted with a warm and friendly smile. They somehow strike the perfect balance. Sometimes they give you space to browse, which I really appreciate when I am not feeling social, and other times they step in with genuine care when it is clear I am a bit lost, which happens often.
Browsing in their stores can feel overwhelming with all the colours and scents, but their team is always grounding and knowledgeable. As someone who often feels shy or anxious in crowds, their kindness makes a real difference. What stands out most to me is that they treat every customer the same, no matter the size of your purchase. That level of respect and care matters deeply. I do not shop there as often as I would like, but whenever I do, it feels like a real treat.

So, when I saw today that Lush was closing all their shops, factories, and even their website, it felt completely in line with the brand I know and admire. Lush has always been a company built on morals and a deep understanding of the world around them, and this decision only reaffirms that.
In a time when conflict is everywhere, standing up for what you believe in feels more important than ever. Right now, so many people are suffering from war, famine, and prejudice. As individuals, we can choose to support more sustainable companies that align with our values, but realistically, we are only one person. Seeing a company as big as Lush take such a bold step and stop trading for a day is a powerful statement. Yes, a single day may not seem like much, but the principal matters. Choosing to make zero turnover for a day is almost unheard of in the business world.

Regardless of your stance on the current conflict in Palestine, I think we can all agree that violence, starvation, and death are never acceptable. I hope more companies follow Lush’s lead by taking meaningful action rather than simply posting a polished social media statement.
This isn’t a one off event for Lush as they are well known for their activism and campaigns regarding their beliefs and ethos. Examples include their tireless work around animal testing, which involved a powerful performance piece in 2012. Also, the inclusion of their charity pots, a scheme which ran for just over 17 years. This was often purchased at the till with 100% of the donation going towards causes, which included animal rights charities, human right charities and environmental causes.
Of course, lets not forget their “Bring it Back” scheme which encourages customers to return used packaging for recycling, has diverted nearly 20 tonnes of plastic waste globally. Additionally, their partnership with the Ocean Legacy Foundation to transform ocean plastic into packaging highlights their proactive approach to environmental stewardship. These are only a few of the many schemes and campaigns they have supported over the years.
I know I will be popping into my local Lush or visiting their website for a little haul as soon as they reopen. Supporting a company like this matters to me, and I encourage others to do the same.
Sincerely,
Catherine
