As you’ve probably figured out by now, I’m completely in love with guinea pigs. From their tiny squeaky voices to their quirky personalities, what’s not to adore? Call me biased, but I genuinely couldn’t imagine life without them. So of course, National Guinea Pig Day is the perfect excuse to celebrate these little bundles of joy.
My experience with guinea pigs goes all the way back to Year 1 in primary school. We had the most adorable class guinea pig named Flora. She got her name from the butter brand, because she was first spotted sitting in an empty tub — a moment that still makes me smile.
Flora stole my heart with her beautiful soft white fur and pretty pink eyes. As a class, we took turns bringing her home for the weekend, but one summer holiday, I was lucky enough to care for her while my teacher went away. I absolutely adored that little piggie — and from that moment on, my love for guinea pigs just kept growing.
When I finished my master’s, I knew it was finally time to adopt some guinea pigs of my own. So I did what any totally subtle person would do — I bought a cage before I even had any piggies. Just a gentle hint to myself (and maybe others) that I was ready.
The day after graduation, I told myself I’d just pop into the pet store to have a little look. Famous last words. That’s where I saw my first little babies — and there was absolutely no way I was leaving without them. So of course, they came home with me and officially started my very first guinea pig family.

Sadly, guinea pigs are very susceptible to illness, especially due to overbreeding. And because they’re prey animals, they’re experts at hiding when something’s wrong — which can make caring for them both rewarding and heartbreaking.
Over the years, I’ve had several little ones, each with their own quirks and personalities. Through every single one, I’ve learned more about how to be a better guinea pig mum. They’ve all taught me something different — and each one holds a special place in my heart. If I could keep them all forever, I absolutely would.

On the whole, guinea pigs are loving, sweet animals — and relatively easy to look after with the right setup. But before you bring any home (and always bring home at least two — guinea pigs should never be kept alone), it’s important to do your research. They need plenty of space, the right diet, enrichment, and of course, lots of love and cuddles.
Believe me, there’s nothing more rewarding than coming home after a long day to their curious little faces, cuddling up with them, and hearing them chirp and chatter like they’re telling you all about their day. There’s a reason they’re known as the chatty rodent

So today, on National Guinea Pig Day, I’m celebrating not just the piggies I get to cuddle right now, but all the ones who’ve been part of my life. Each one has left tiny paw prints on my heart and helped shape the piggie mum I am today.
To Bailey, Hurley, Eddie, Maverick, Ivy, Archie, and Molly — I miss and love you all more than words can say. Thank you for the cuddles, the chaos, the chatter, and the comfort. You’ll always be a part of me.
And to Tilly and Riley — thank you for continuing to fill my days with joy, snuggles, and endless squeaks. I’m so lucky to have you.
To every guinea pig, past and present — here’s to your curious noses, comforting squeaks, and boundless love. Happy National Guinea Pig Day 💚🐾
