Autumn Days and Cosy Ways

Published on 8 September 2025 at 11:09

I can feel autumn arriving soon. The nights are gradually drawing in, and the daylight is slowly fading. Everywhere I look, the signs are there. TikTok creators are sharing their autumn décor inspiration, and shops are swapping out summer styles for warmer clothes in classic autumn colours like browns, oranges and deep greens. It is becoming impossible to ignore that summer is winding down.

The weather has most definitely been raining on and off lately. Even so, the air still holds a hint of warmth, as if summer is reluctant to let go. But even on the clearer, milder days, there is something comforting about the anticipation of cosy layers, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the scent of cinnamon and spice drifting through the air. Autumn is more than just a season. It is a mood, a feeling that wraps around you like a soft blanket, inviting you to slow down and savour the small, simple moments.

One thing I absolutely love about this time of year is that it is officially jumper season. You know those days when it is too warm for a coat but just chilly enough to throw on a big cosy knit? That is the sweet spot. My favourite thing to do is pop onto Etsy and look for a cute, unique jumper, usually something with a Gilmore Girls quote or a few little embroidered pumpkins. It is those small touches that make it feel special. The tights come back out, the corduroy returns, and the scarves start to make their way back into rotation.

Of course, no autumn evening is complete without a proper mug of hot chocolate. There is just something about wrapping your hands around a warm cup that instantly makes you slow down and breathe a little deeper. Whether it is classic hot chocolate with marshmallows, or something a bit more indulgent with whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of caramel, it is one of those small comforts that makes this time of year feel extra special. I love sipping it from my favourite mug, preferably with a blanket over my legs and an old film playing in the background. Something familiar and comforting that suits the cosy mood. It is those little rituals that help ease the shift into the darker, cooler months and remind me why I love autumn so much.

It is also the perfect time of year for crisp autumn walks. The leaves begin to turn beautiful burnt orange and golden yellow shades, slowly falling from the trees and covering the ground. Even driving down the A-roads lined with trees on either side can be a lovely sight to take in. There is something peaceful about the changing colours and the gentle rustle of leaves. It is one of the quiet advantages of living in the countryside, where you can really see the seasons change right outside your window.

For me, autumn feels like a time of preparation. Getting ready for winter and that forbidden word, not for me though, Christmas. I like to start trying out new baking recipes and perfecting my gingerbread technique. Last time I made them, the whole box was gone by lunchtime. I also really enjoy shopping in the evenings when it is darker. I know it sounds strange, but as someone who feels anxious in large crowds, it is much nicer to go later on. There is nothing better than a quiet browse around my local, or local-ish, retail park when it is peaceful and calm.

And let us not forget the pyjamas and fluffy socks. I am a girl who very much values comfort. As soon as I am home, I am straight into my pyjamas, no makeup, and snuggled up. Add a blanket and my favourite cushion and it is just bliss. I think it is my guinea pigs' favourite time of year too. I love decorating their cage with little themed toys and chews. They also enjoy a cuddly, soft blanket. Even the ones I want to keep just for myself never actually stay only mine. I once had a little piggie who loved to fall asleep in my dressing gown. Such a little cutie.

Something that also makes its return is pumpkins. Whether they are used as decorations or baked into a pie, they are everywhere this time of year. I love carving them, even though I am not the biggest fan of eating them. Thankfully, the piggies enjoy having a little nibble, so it is nice to give them a seasonal treat. Pumpkins come in all shapes, colours and sizes, which makes them even more fun to collect and decorate with. I also like to knit little pumpkins myself. It is also back into coat season, something I have not had to pick up since the beginning of the year. Wrapping up in a scarf, bobble hat and gloves makes going outside feel like a chance to accessorise and have a bit of fun with my look. I find myself more likely to carry a handbag and put some thought into my outfits again. I especially love pulling out my autumn boots, particularly brown ones. They feel so perfect for the season and add a lovely finishing touch. There is something satisfying about bringing out my favourite burgundy handbag as well. It instantly adds a touch of warmth and style to any autumn day. Getting dressed feels less like a chore and more like a small way to enjoy the season.

Lastly, let us not forget the scents. Autumn is full of them, and they have a way of bringing comfort unlike anything else. A pumpkin spiced latte in hand, the gentle aroma of a spiced cinnamon diffuser filling the room, or the smell of a freshly baked apple pie drifting through the kitchen can all make a house feel more like a home. There is also something grounding about the natural scents this season brings. The earthy smell of fallen leaves, the crisp freshness in the air after a rainstorm and the gentle, woody scent from a log burner all add to the cosy atmosphere. I also love the look and smell of wreaths made from twigs, dried fruits and seasonal herbs. Whether it is in a warm drink, a homely kitchen or a walk through the woods, these familiar smells quietly remind us to slow down. They are part of what makes autumn feel so comforting and inviting.

What is your favourite part of autumn? Do you have a favourite candle scent? Let us know in the comments.

Sincerely,
Catherine
