Boos, Ballgowns and Bewitching Moves

It’s Halloween, my favourite week of Strictly Come Dancing! I love all the spooky costumes, creepy hair and dramatic make-up. This is the week we are transported to a whole new eerie world full of zombies, ghosts and all things scary. The dancers really embrace the theme, not just in their moves but in their storytelling, making it one of the most theatrical nights of the series. Get ready to be mesmerised by this spooktastic evening filled with drama, intensity and a few surprises along the way.

Sadly, we said goodbye to Ellie and Vito, who danced the Tango this week. I really admired Ellie’s effort and energy. She did her community proud, and I loved the representation she brought to the show. Dancing is for everyone and should never be gatekept. It was heart warming to see how much love the audience and judges had for them, proving that Strictly is about more than just technique. It is about passion, personality and the stories we bring to the dancefloor.

So, let’s get to it. As usual, I’ll go through the couples in order of appearance.

Vicky Patterson – American Smooth (8)

I absolutely love Vicky and the progress she’s making on her dance journey. You can really see her transforming into a beautiful dancer. I’ll be a little picky and say that if she could just point her toes, it would really help to finish her lines. But overall, it was another amazing dance from Vicky.

Ellie Goldstien – Tango (6)

I’ll be honest, out of all the dances she’s done, this wasn’t my favourite. I liked the theme and the performance side of things, but I did feel it was a little stompy at times and there were a few timing issues. It was quite different from her usual bubbly, sassy style, which made for an interesting change.

George Clarke – Cha cha (7)

This dance was definitely an improvement on last week. He had good hip action and delivered a fun, clean performance. As the judges mentioned, he needs to remember to turn out his feet throughout the routine. I also really enjoyed the little tricks he included in the choreography.

La Voix – Paso Doble (9)

What a step up from La Voix this week. I loved the drama, the intensity and the theme. She used her skirt brilliantly and gave it everything a Paso should have. The power in this dance was incredible. I also loved how deeply she connected with the emotion of the performance.

Lewis Cope – Couples Choice (10)

There is no denying that Lewis is a fantastic dancer, but tonight I thought he outdid himself. He had control and perfect synchronicity with Kayta. I loved her character throughout, and a little bit of tap dancing went a long way. Honestly, 10 out of 10.

Balvinder Sopia – Rumba (8)

I really enjoyed this dance. I loved Balvinder’s take on it as she fully embraced the role of a siren. She was sensual, drawing us all in and keeping us captivated throughout. I could see a real improvement, and I absolutely loved her lines. Gorgeous.

Harry Aikines-Aryeetey – American Smooth (7)

I liked the parts of the dance that were out of hold, as they felt fun and joyful. I just felt that every time he went back into hold it was a little stiff and didn’t flow as well. The lifts were really impressive, although I wasn’t completely sure about the theme of the dance.

Karen Carey – Argentine Tango (10)

Amazing. Everything about this dance just worked. I really felt the connection, the drama and the story. I loved the counterbalance pose so much. I also really enjoyed Karen dressed in a traditional man’s costume. It felt like a battle between the two of them, each reacting to the other’s steps, which is exactly what an Argentine Tango is all about.

Alex Kingston – Salsa (9)

Alex brought the fun with a devilish side. I have to say I really enjoyed the change of pace from the rest of the evening. It was fun, energetic and really brought the party to the dancefloor. Also, can we give a shout out to Jojo? What an outfit.

Amber Davies – Viennese Waltz (9)

After last week’s surprise bottom two dance-off, Amber came back with a bang. She looked amazing, transitioning in and out of hold effortlessly. The drama and tension were epic. Love, love, love.

I think this week’s show brought drama and tension throughout. The costumes, hair and make-up were out of this world. Bringing to life such an amazing atmosphere was fantastic. Of course, the judges also got involved in the wedding of the year! Anton actually looked so precious in his bridesmaid outfit. Overall, absolutely hysterical!

Keep dancing,
Catherine
