When Icons Take the Floor: Week Five

Published on 27 October 2025 at 10:11

It’s week five on Strictly and it’s another themed week: Icons Week. The celebrities have been given the chance to show off their dance moves as their favourite icons. From Cher to Cheryl Cole, lots of big names are sure to make a splash.

Sadly, once again, we saw another couple leave the competition. This week’s couple was Jimmy and Lauren, who danced an American Smooth. There was no way he deserved to be in the bottom two, but I think being in that middle part of the table is the danger zone. I loved his dancing and his improvement week after week. I’m so sad to see him go and wish he could have stayed in longer.

We also saw Stefan Dennis leave the show on medical grounds with a calf injury. It’s a shame, as I really enjoyed his performance last week and felt he had more to give. Nevertheless, he has had a couple of fun dances and hopefully he gets better soon.

So, let’s get to it. As usual, I’ll go through the couples in order of appearance.

Lewis Cope – Quickstep (9)

This dance had plenty of bounce and content. His hold has definitely improved, and his transitions seemed effortless. Overall, it was a great performance to start Icons Week, as the legend Johnny Cash.

Karen Carney – Rumba (6)

Celine Dion was Karen’s choice of icon this week. The Rumba is a difficult dance, and I think she gave a really emotional performance. A little more fluidity and cleaner finishing lines would have really elevated her Rumba.

Ellie Goldstein – Salsa (7)

Spice up your life! I love the Spice Girls, and I loved this dance. It’s so clear to see the improvement Ellie has made. I felt she was in control of her energy throughout the routine, and although it may have lacked a little hip action, it was lovely to see her enjoying the process of learning to dance.

Alex Kingston -Foxtrot (9)

Who doesn’t love a bit of Dolly Parton? This partnership is pure gold. I loved this dance so much. Her frame was gorgeous, and it looked effortless. She stayed in character the whole way through. Anton is right – divine.

George Clarke – Jive (5)

Oh George, this wasn’t your week. While I think he captured that relaxed Harry-style vibe, this jive really lacked the attack and energy it needed. It might have worked better and given a different dimension to the dance if he had done so.

Vicky Patterison – Couple Choices (9)

Of course, our North East girl had to dance to the Geordie princess, Cheryl Cole. Wow, wow, wow! Vicky has come so far in this competition. The nerves are long gone, replaced by a strong and powerful performance. Overall, the synchronisation was amazing. She looked confident and commanding. She’s done Newcastle proud.

Balvinder Sopia – Quickstep (7)

So, Beyoncé was in the house tonight, and Balvinder really looked great. I think she’s constantly improving and came back with a bang. It’s difficult to return after being in the dance-off, which she shouldn’t have been in at all. I really enjoyed the energy in this dance and the touch of country flair she brought to it.

Harry Aikines-Aryeetey – Argentine Tango (7)
As a millennial, I remember the early days of Usher, so smooth and suave. In fact, it pains me when his music comes on a night out and the kids, yes I am old, do not know who he is. But wow, Harry brought Usher back tonight. Intense, smooth, and boy, what a show. The dance captured that intensity perfectly, with the typical call and response that the Argentine Tango requires. I am team Anton and Motsi on this one.

Amber Davies – Cha Cha (9)

Ponytails high, girlies, it is Ariana Grande. Amber looked great! I will say the routine was a little stop-start and not my favourite style of dance, but still very entertaining. It is clear Amber works hard on the feedback she is given and should be commended. The beginning was strong and dazzling. Very well done.

Jimmy Floydd-Hassel Bank – American Smooth (8)

Aww, Purple Rain. This song just gives me the chills, and so did this performance. So smooth and emotional. Jimmy showed a strong frame and is improving week by week. There was a little wobble on one move, but the lifts were amazing and dramatic. I am loving Jimmy’s work.

La Voix – Salsa (7)

So much better! What a fantastic way to end the show. From the singing at the beginning to the dancing, everything was great. La Voix, who, gave the best characterisation of the night. She brought the party to the dance floor. Cher would have been proud.

Once again, the performances this weekend were all so close in scores. I still do not think I can call who will be in the bottom two each week. Do not get me wrong, like everyone else I have favourite dances, which I have found have not always been for the same person each week. I cannot wait for next week, especially with it being Halloween.

What did you think of the performances? Any stand-outs or bold predictions? Let us know in the comments below.

Keep dancing,
Catherine
